About the Program

The academic officers program is the central and prestigious program in the IDF for training academic officers in engineering, science, medicine, economics, law, and other professions. The program allows you to continue academic studies after finishing high school. Upon completing your studies, you will serve the mandatory service and an additional 3 years of permanent (Keva) service as an academic officer.

What Will My Service Look Like

*the length of the mandatory service in the academization and the academic officers program varies depending on age

4 years of undergraduate study before military service (with a master’s option!)
mandatory service + 3 years permanent service
serve in a position related to your profession

How do I know if I am eligible for the program?

To be eligible for the Academic Officers Program, you must meet the following criteria

  • Appropriate personal data.
  • Acceptance into an academic institution.
  • Passing a series of personality-based screening tests.
  • Psychometric test result of 590 or more, or SAT scores of at least 1170.
  • Impressive high school transcript.

The Admssion Process

Receive Tzav Rishon (initial draft) in the mail.
Arrive at the tzav rishon and go through all of the stations.
Register for the Academic Officers Program through the “Mitgaisim” website.
Begin testing to check eligibility for the program.
Ensure completion of psychometric or SAT exam before the final deadline. (April of the year you are applying to the program)
Registration and acceptance to academic institutions.
Final acceptance to the program.

*Please note: Women and men over the age of 21 who arrived in Israel after June 1st, 2020, are considered volunteers in the army and therefore must contact the IDF to begin the recruitment process

The Academization Track

Graduates with a STEM Degree? We’re Looking for You!
The Academization Track is part of the IDF’s Academic Officer Program and offers graduates
with a Bachelor's or Master's degree in a range of fields the opportunity to serve in their
profession as academic officers in the IDF.
Graduates of the program will serve according to the mandatory service duration of the track,
followed by an additional 24 months of permanent service.


As part of the track, you are entitled to the following benefits:
● Placement in the IDF as an academic in your field of study
● Academic professional officer ranks
● One-time grant of 10,500 ILS
● Academic salary bonuses during both mandatory and permanent service
● Opportunities for advancement and career development within the military


Eligibility for selection and placement is conditional upon the following criteria:
● Great tzav rishon results
● Eligibility for an academic degree in the required fields
● A final academic degree average of at least 75
● Commitment to 24 months of permanent service (For olim chadashim, according to the
service duration table)
● For women: a commitment to serve under equal terms and conditions as men.
● Passing a security clearance screening
● Completion of all requirements for eligibility by the start date of the position (October,
January, or April)


The screening and recruitment process for the academization program
1. Registration for the Academization Program – Academization Questionnaire
2. Screenings and Interviews in Various Technological Units
3. Opening of the ranking questionnaire and communicating results to accepted
candidates.
4. Completion of enlistment day and deployment to academic reserve duty + Security
clearance approval
5. Academic Basic Training and Commencement of Military Service
